This past weekend was a big race weekend for me. Between running 31 miles and driving 16+ hours (round-trip) to said race, I’ve been distracted from paying much attention to things.
But there is always something bringing joy into my life, even if I have to stop and consciously consider it amongst the distractions.

Tony’s Coffee Cold Brew + Chocolate Milk
After the Oregon Coast 50, they had the regular assortment of beverages, Coke (nothing beats a cold can of coke after a long run), beer, water, sports drink.
However, this race had one option I’d never seen at a race before – cartons of cold brew coffee. Specifically, Tony’s Coffee Cold Brew cartons in both regular (with milk and sugar) and chocolate (milk, sugar, and chocolate) varieties.
I had the chocolate and man was it good!
It was basically chocolate milk with just a touch of coffee bitterness to cut the sweetness of straight chocolate milk.
Chocolate milk is a great recovery drink (especially in my Zoku Slushie Maker), but I don’t often have it in the fridge. This I can see having in my fridge at all times.
Although I don’t think it would last very long – I’m pretty sure I’d drink all I had in one sitting.
As far as I can tell Tony’s Coffee Cold Brew + Chocolate Milk is available in grocery stores in the Pacific Northwest and can be ordered through the Smith Brother’s Farm website.
I love a good mantra.
I love cute jewelry.
What could be better than cute mantra jewelry?
Momentum Jewelry makes ‘Motivate Wraps’ – bracelets made up of a mantra on a fabric wrap.
I have a growing collection of Momentum bracelets. The Empower race I did last year had one in place of the usual finisher’s medal, I’ve gotten a few as gifts. I even won one on an Instagram giveaway.
And if I do say so myself, it looks even cuter when worn in combination with the marathon training bracelets I sell in my Etsy shop.
The Orphanage (El orfanato)
Tis the season for scary movies.
I’m not a huge fan of horror films. The real-world is scary enough thank you very much. The last thing I want to do in my free time is to scare myself some more.
But I do like a good thriller. A little bit of mystery, a little bit of the unknown. So while I can’t recommend many true horror films this Halloween, I can recommend The Orphanage (or El orfanato in Spanish).
The Orphanage is about a couple who moves into the now-abandoned orphanage where the mother lived as a child. They are looking to refurbish and re-open the orphanage.
And… well… stuff happens.
Nothing gory, nothing even that scary. But lots of weirdness, lots of ominous doings, and lots of menacing atmosphere.
This is the kind of movie I like to watch during the Halloween season.
Just an FYI – this movie is in Spanish with English subtitles. I’m not sure if the subtitles are wonky or my Spanish is worse than I thought, but any number of times reading the subtitles, I thought ‘that isn’t even remotely what I thought she said’.
The Orphanage is available to rent on Amazon Prime and iTunes
Faux Fireplaces Space Heaters
This is totally random, and totally niche, but still…
While traveling to Oregon for my race I stayed at a little hotel, Deanes Oceanfront (totally recommended if you find yourself if Yachats, OR). It’s a cute little place on the beach.
It had a feature I love and that I’ve only seen in a few little coastal hotels- faux fireplace heaters.
Now I love a good fireplace or a blazing campfire, but the temperature can be hard to control – I often find myself not feeling any heat at all or boiling. Campfires often blow smoke in my face and now the smell of campfires reminds me a little of the smell that wafted in the Bay Area when the Santa Rosa wildfires were burning last year.
Not exactly a relaxing memory.
But these things are basically space heaters with a fake light-up fireplace. It is so easy to control the temperature.
The one at Deanes was a Duraflame Electric Stove. While it’s not exactly the same as a real fireplace (and making s’mores isn’t an option), they are so much more fun than a regular space heater.
